Coterie is an online chat-based role-playing game set in the world of White Wolf Game Studio’s classic Vampire: The Masquerade role-playing game. Played over Internet Relay Chat (IRC), we meld White Wolf’s game with our fictional setting of Santa Almeria, California to play out the nightly conflicts between the vampire residents of our fictional metropolis.

Coterie is a persistent setting ran on our private IRC server that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There are no set play times, and players are almost always on and ready to play. To accommodate play, the game is assumed to always take place at night, regardless of the time of day. Combined with our advanced and intuitive bot and character sheet system, players have all the tools to play at anytime or any place without the hassle of having to worry about keeping track of their sheet or traits such as bloodpool and willpower. Our bot, Myrmidon, also handles rolling dice as well as automating hunting.

Play is facilitated by using multiple IRC channels to represent different locations in the city, such as #TheOdyssey representing the The Odyssey nightclub, which houses a private VIP lounge used as the city’s Elysia. The Odyssey itself is located on #Street, a major thoroughfare running through Santa Almeria’s Downtown district. Players move about the city by hopping from channel to channel and emoting their character’s actions, using dice rolls as necessary (such as making a ‘General Perception’ roll to spot another character in a crowded club). Additionally, both In Character and Out of Character Forums as well as In Character ‘Journals’ are provided for additional role-playing. An expansive and well-developed wiki for the chronicle provides out of character reference on Vampire: The Masquerade, the Old World of Darkness (OwoD), Santa Almeria, and its inhabitants.

For those familiar with White Wolf’s Old World of Darkness setting and Vampire: The Masquerade, our rules are largely the same as the 3rd (Revised) edition rules for Vampire: The Masquerade. The exceptions to those rules are located on our House Rules section of the website and on the wiki. Though we use the 3rd Edition rules, we actually use a 2nd Edition setting. This means that the Week of Nightmares has not come to pass, the Assamites are still cursed, Malkavians still practice the use of Dominate instead of Dementation and so forth.

If you are new to VtM, or even just not familiar with this period of the setting, we have a ton of written material both here on the website to help you out, as well as a ton of players and staff always ready and willing to help answer any and all of your questions. New players are also welcome to observe play before creating a character to get a feel for the game and how it is played.

So, hop on the forums and sign into the server at! Say hello, get to know everyone and make a character so that you too can join in the mystery, plotting and politicking!
